Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The C B Cox Stakes is a Group 2 Australian Thoroughbred horse race held under weight for age conditions, for horses aged 3 years old and upwards, over a distance of 2100 metres at Ascot Racecourse, Perth in December.

The race was formerly run over 2400m but in 2008 it was dropped back in distance to 2100m to coincide with the Perth Cup on New Year's Day which was reduced in distance from 3200m to 2400m. This change allowed several horses that also ran the Kingston Town Classic to also run in the C B Cox Stakes. The C B Cox Stakes has been a great guide to finding the winners and placegetters of the Perth Cup over the years.
